SMO enhances failure reporting process
SMO enhances failure reporting process
Cheryl Schroeder/SMO
For the U.S. only
Support Materials Organization (SMO) is improving the
interface between field CEs and SMO repair technicians on
operational issues involving exchange assemblies. The
following changes are to promote better communication
between the Systems Support Organization (SSO) and SMO.
A new failure detail form, including a product line
reference and phone number for SSO use, will be enclosed
with each exchange board repaired at SMO. When a CE calls
SMO repair will assume ownership for resolving the issue and
communicating the results.
Technicians at SMO will have read access to FIREMAN, giving
them the option of examining calls if additional failure
information is needed.
If the technician needs additional information that cannot
be obtained from the call detail, a message will be logged
to the CE through the call management organization.

New HP Channel Partner compensation programs
New HP Channel Partner compensation programs
Diane Podkomorski/CSO
For the U.S. and Canada only
Beginning June 1, new discount schedules and leverage
compensation plans take effect for VARs, ISVs, SIs, and
OEMs. The new schedules will be appended to current
customer purchase agreements. New contracts will use the
new exhibits. As contracts expire customers will be moved
to the new schedules automatically.
Program change highlights
ISV compensation is reduced to the lesser of 7 percent of
the hardware value or 30 percent of the software value. HP
will compensate ISVs with a combination of 4 percent cash
and 3 percent co-op funds, with an overall annual cap of
$250,000. OEMs will have a discount structure that matches
VARs'. Contract discounts will continue to be 3 percent
higher than for VARs. Discount reductions for drop-
shipments to end users will be available.
The Discount Framework Implementation Field Reference Guide
documents the changes being implemented over the next six
months to Channel Partner discounts and compensation.
Copies have been sent to all members of North American Field
Operations SF 38. To receive a copy contact Diane
Podkomorski/HP6650/16.

New IMpact co-op program launched
New IMpact co-op program launched
Craig Harvey/VAC Marketing Center
On June 1, HP launches IMpact, (Incentive Marketing Pact),
Computer Systems Organization's new cooperative marketing
program for qualified HP Channel Partners (formerly known as
VABs). The IMpact Program is open to most U.S., Canadian,
Asia Pacific, and Latin American Channel Partners (VARs,
ISVs, SIs, and distributors) that have current HP contracts.
IMpact is designed to be the most comprehensive and flexible
co-op program in the industry, providing HP Channel Partners
with a wide variety of ways to receive reimbursement for
marketing and business activities. Reselling Channel
Partners (such as VARs) will accrue three percent of their
net shipments of eligible HP products automatically.
Leveraging Channel Partners (such as ISVs) will accrue up to
three percent of their leveraged net shipments after they
apply and are approved for total cash/co-op compensation.
North American Channel Partners will each have one IMpact
account for all U.S. and Canadian sales.
Participating Channel Partners will receive copies of the
IMpact program guidelines brochure and IMpact program
resources binder from SF 38 sales reps. The brochure
details major components of the program and outlines all
reimbursable activities and guidelines for ensuring
reimbursement. The binder contains claim forms, sample
monthly statements, and marketing and promotional materials
to help Channel Partners promote HP solutions.
Pinpoint Marketing, an external co-op administration agency,
will audit all claims and mail reimbursement checks or
rejection letters to submitting Channel Partners. Pinpoint
will also mail monthly Channel Partner accrual/activity
statements to participating Channel Partners and SF 38 sales
reps, district managers, and area sales managers. Pinpoint
can answer claim and program questions at 800-662-8188.
For more information
IMpact program training is scheduled for SF 38 contract
reps, sales and telesales reps, sponsoring entities, and
field and factory marketing personnel. Training topics are
also covered in the IMpact program guidelines brochure.

Clarity Rapport shipping on HP-UX
Clarity Rapport shipping on HP-UX
Chris Woodward/WSY
P11.tif (Graphic)
Product name: Rapport
VAB: Clarity
Description: complete, open suite of UNIX system
applications that allows users to create and communicate
simple text or multimedia compound documents and slide
presentations for business management and communication
throughout organizations without using PCs or Macintoshes
Target market: technical and commercial users of UNIX
system workstations, especially large accounts with mixed
PC-workstation environments or those migrating from PCs to
HP workstations, who need to complete everyday business
tasks with spreadsheets, word processing, and slide
applications
Clarity Rapport, voted best product of 1991 by UNIXWorld, is
shipping on HP-UX. Rapport runs under X Windows with an
OSF/Motif graphical interface. Rapport converters, in
conjunction with Rapport advanced e-mail, transform
documents into UNIX system, PC, and Macintosh formats
automatically and transparently so users can send e-mail
even to people using other applications and different
hardware. Other UNIX system applications and files may be
used from within Rapport.
Features and benefits
advanced e-mail--Rapport's e-mail client allows users to
share compound documents or slide presentations that contain
multiple applications and media types. Rapport mail is
closely linked with text for easy sending, circulating,
reviewing, and editing of documents. If any mail recipients
are using PCs, Macintoshes, or other UNIX system
applications, Rapport automatically converts the document
components into each recipient's preferred format. Rapport
uses UNIX SendMail, so no changes need to be made to mail
systems and gateways.
document composition--Rapport's document editor handles word
processing with icons, windows, and pull-down menus for
point-and-click simplicity. It is object based and users
can easily incorporate audio, color images, drawings, and
live spreadsheets into documents.
spreadsheets--In addition to typical standalone spreadsheet
package features, users can include other objects, such as
audio, graphics, color images, and full documents, within
spreadsheet cells. Users can also incorporate active
spreadsheets inside formatted text documents. Whenever
spreadsheet numbers are changed, charts or other
spreadsheet-based data are updated automatically.
presentation graphics--With Rapport's drawing capabilities
users can prepare a range of charts, drawings, or
annotations to text, spreadsheets, or images. Images may be
scanned in or captured onscreen from other applications and
scaled to fit. Users can create slides including masters,
templates, and thumbnail views of entire presentations using
all the media and applications in Rapport.
audio--For notes and annotations to documents, complete
multimedia presentations on workstations, or voice e-mail,
users can integrate any sounds captured over microphones or
input from CDs.
Ordering information
Rapport is available for HP Apollo 9000 Series 700
workstations and HP 700/RX X-terminals. Price for the
complete Rapport package is $895 with quantity discounts

Total sales: multimillion dollars
Competition: Lance +
Sales rep, office: Brian Herzig, Tampa, Florida
Selling points
GTE Data Services is deploying a nationwide network of
client/server applications based on open systems from
several vendors. The initial applications supported GTE
customer service representatives. The customer required
central network support without an increase in support
personnel. Industry standards were also important. GTE
chose HP OpenView Network Node Manager and Extensible SNMP
Agent for HP OpenView Network Node Manager's extensibility
and flexibility to add GTE-specific features, and for HP
OpenView's adherence to standards and its choice as a core
technology for the Open Software Foundation distributed
management environment (OSF DME). HP OpenView provided
early alerts to specific events; a single view into open
systems; application, system, and network management; and a
clear path to OSF DME.
With HP OpenView, GTE Data Services' National Network
Operations can monitor critical events and status of
applications and systems. The customer can capture
information on datacommunications links and client/server
applications that was not previously available.
Customers mentioned in this article should not be contacted
directly. For more information about the customer or sale,

CaseWare/CM--DSEE migration alternative
CaseWare/CM--DSEE migration alternative
Debbie Tarr/WSBU
CaseWare/CM (formerly Amplify Control), a comprehensive
software configuration management (SCM) system with an open
architecture for tool integration, is designed to support
medium- to large-scale UNIX system development teams running
in a heterogeneous, distributed computing environment.
Rather than support a single, specific configuration
management process, CaseWare/CM supports a variety of SCM
methodologies. It is a multiplatform, operating system
version-independent system.
Flexibility allows CaseWare to provide DSEE users with
familiar capabilities and new features and benefits. DSEE
users will find the concepts of libraries, systems, system
models, and configuration threads supported in CaseWare/CM.
Users who enjoy DSEE's distributed build facility and shared
object management will find the same benefits in
CaseWare/CM's object-oriented build facility. CaseWare/CM
features also include rule-based configuration definition;
build support; portable, heterogeneous platform support;
project data management; full problem tracking; DSEE data
migration; and graphical and command line user interface.
CaseWare will provide a 30 percent trade-in allowance
applied to the CaseWare/CM purchase price to the first 25
DSEE customers who wish to migrate to CaseWare/CM.
Ordering information
CaseWare/CM is available on a floating license or site
license basis. The average price per user for a standard
package is $4,000. Orders for CaseWare/CM 3.0 are being
taken and product shipments start in June.

change and configuration management across the entire
software life cycle. Change management controls the changes
to individual components while configuration management
provides control over all components in multiple releases of
a given application.
CCC is easy to use and implement yet provides sufficient
extensibility to fill rough, complex technical requirements.
CCC is not a UNIX-only product. It is available on VAX, IBM
mainframes, and PCs. Softool's dedication to its customers
is exemplified by a support organization offering hotline,
training, implementation, and customization services.
Migration promotion and program
As a special promotion for DSEE customers Softool is
offering a $2,000 rebate toward the purchase of CCC.
Softool has also designed a DSEE-to-CCC conversion package
to provide the support necessary to ensure a successful
migration. The conversion process includes a review of
current customer techniques and tools, selection of a
conversion pilot project, CCC training, CCC database design,
file transfer, setting of access controls, software engineer
training, and transition of the project to new CCC users.
Ordering information
CCC is available on HP 9000 Series 300/800 and HP Apollo
9000 Series 400/700 under HP-UX and is encapsulated into

TeamNet from TeamOne Systems--DSEE migration alternative
TeamNet from TeamOne Systems--DSEE migration alternative
Debbie Tarr/WSBU
TeamNet is a configuration management tool that acts as a
safety net supporting large-scale distributed development
projects. All changes to file types are tracked as a
byproduct of the work. As directories and files evolve as a
natural part of the development life cycle, TeamNet
transparently tracks the changes and automatically relates
file and directory versions to appropriate system releases.
To project team members this means that configuration and
version management operations are streamlined to provide a
productive and stable work environment. Engineer and
project team members can focus on work without manually
tracking changes. They can use any combination of tools and
files. Quality and productivity can improve as there are
fewer mistakes caused by using out-of-date releases.
TeamNet is easy to use. No tool integration or
encapsulation is necessary. TeamNet works with SoftBench
and TeamOne is planning a deeper integration.
Comparison and migration information
TeamNet provides similar functionality to DSEE but is easier
to use and implement. TeamNet, like DSEE, is designed for
large-scale, distributed software engineering environments.
TeamNet is better suited to running with complex CASE and
CAD tools as it can track changes to any file type. Unlike
DSEE, TeamNet works automatically with UNIX system and
third-party tools for system builds. TeamNet is an open
environment that leverages industry standards like HP-UX,
Network File System, OSF/Motif, and X-Windows.
TeamNet is part of the HP Open Migration Program for DSEE
customers. TeamOne is offering a trade-in discount and
supporting documentation and services for DSEE users who
wish to migrate to TeamNet. As TeamNet is designed to
operate in distributed environments like DSEE, TeamOne plans
to offer an efficient migration from DSEE to TeamNet.
Ordering information
TeamNet employs a floating license mechanism and customers
purchase the product based upon the number of active users.
On average the price is $2,400-$3,000 for two users.
International pricing is available.
TeamNet's availability on HP Apollo 9000 Series 400 and 700
workstations will be announced jointly with HP at the June 8
Design Automation Conference in Anaheim, California. First
customer shipments are expected in early July.

As of June 1 high-end HP 9000 Model 8X7S business servers
have been repriced and repositioned to make the products
competitive in multiuser markets and allow you to capitalize
on large and emerging server market opportunities. The
repriced business servers are positioned aggressively as

This strategically links the Series 800 server family and HP
Apollo 9000 Series 700 workstation family and positions HP
UNIX system offerings as one comprehensive family.
The June Corporate Price List will reflect the Model 8X7S
repricing and this combined with the June disk mechanism
repricing and May memory products repricing will make the
Model 8X7S family attractive relative to the competition in
multiuser environments. Use the aggressive prices to
penetrate competitive sales situations and close new deals
faster.
With the strategic realignment of the Series 700 and 800
product lines, Model 8X7S products can also fill the need
for large-scale servers in Series 700 workstation accounts.

HP 9000 Corporate Business Server Model 890 upgrade program
HP 9000 Corporate Business Server Model 890 upgrade
program
Krishnan Natarajan/GSY
With the introduction of the HP 9000 Corporate Business
Server Model 890, installed-base Model 870S customers will
be provided with upgrade paths to the new systems. The
upgrades provide a growth path for Model 870S customers who
are performance constrained.
Return credits for the Model 870S family depend on the
degree of multiprocessing. The largest return credits are
for Models 870S/300 and 870S/400. Return credits for Models
870S/100 and 870S/200 are less because these systems can be
upgraded without a platform change. Overall, it is more
financially attractive for Model 870S customers to upgrade
within the package before moving to the Model 890 platform.
There are return credits for memory and selected I/O cards.
In addition to the installed-base upgrades, a bridging
program is available for customers who require delivery of
Model 890 prior to the start of shipments in October.
Customers can order and take delivery of a Model 877S for
software development and installation and receive a return
credit when they order Model 890 prior to November 1 and
take immediate delivery.

Networking enhanced with HP MPE/iX Release 4.0
Networking enhanced with HP MPE/iX Release 4.0
Mark Hudson/CSY
HP MPE/iX Release 4.0 provides additional multivendor
capabilities such as with Domain Name Resolver, Berkeley
Sockets, NCS, SNMP Agent, and HP LU 6.2/PU 2.1 API and
additional connectivity options to access the HP 3000 such
as a native Token Ring solution, a second HP-Precision Bus
(HP-PB) 802.3 LAN card, and host-based X.25 management; and
users are provided with increased capacity and performance.
HP MPE/iX Release 4.0 is representative of the HP 3000
commitment to support de facto, industry standard,
comprehensive open networking solutions.
ARPA/NS transport (TCP/IP) enhancements
Functionality enhancements to TCP/IP improve connectivity of
the HP 3000 in multivendor environments and increase the
capacity and performance of the HP 3000 in client/server
environments, which allows the HP 3000 to be used as a
server for more clients. Performance improvements match the
increasing power and performance of the HP 3000.
Additional enhancements include transparent support for
Domain Name Resolver (client), default gateway, cache
aging, negative advice, and the ability to use only Ethernet
frames and ARP (turn off 802.3 frames and HP Probe
protocol). Increased capacity includes support for 4,096
TCP connections from 1,024 previously. The number of
remote nodes has increased to 4,096. Performance
improvements offer better throughput and CPU utilization.
Users of transport level NetIPC API can expect a throughput
increase of 45 percent and a CPU utilization reduction of up
to 60 percent compared to the 3.1 release transport.
At the services level users should see comparable
performance improvements. For example, HP Resource Sharing
realizes a throughput gain of 50 percent and a CPU
utilization reduction of up to 20 percent (see "Throughput
improvements for HP Resource Sharing" in this issue), and NS
NFT realizes a throughput gain of up to 35 percent compared
to Release 3.1.
TCP/IP functionality is incorporated with HP 3000 LAN and
WAN products: HP ThinLAN/iX, Token Ring/iX, X.25 Link, and
NS Point-to-Point Link.
Berkeley Sockets Version 4.3 support
Application developers can port applications to the HP 3000
using a standard networking interface, which allows the HP
3000 to be integrated into UNIX system computing
environments. BSD Sockets Release 4.0 supports basic stream
and datagram communication types and can operate on local
and internet domains. For more information access the
Network Hotline, subject SOCKETS.
Berkeley Sockets functionality will be a part of the
fundamental operating system (FOS) on HP MPE/iX 4.0 and
later releases. The FOS allows users to develop
interprocess communications between applications on the same
CPU. To implement applications that use interprocess
communications to remote nodes via the network users must
have Release 4.0 or later of TCP/IP, which is included with
HP 3000 LAN and WAN products.
NETIPC will continue to be supported on the HP 3000. Users
can migrate NETIPC applications to BSD Sockets to increase
application portability but are not required to do so.
Users are encouraged to develop new applications using BSD
Sockets, since it is an industry standard interface.
NCS 1.5.1
HP 3000 has an enabler for creation of distributed
client/server applications with support of NCS 1.5.1, which
is the basis for application developers to build distributed
applications. Applications can be partitioned to run on
systems containing data, thus minimizing network traffic and
maximizing application performance. NCS 1.5.1 is the
predecessor to the NCS component of Open Software Foundation
distributed computing environment (OSF DCE). Developers can
begin building distributed applications on the HP 3000 using
NCS 1.5.1 and migrate easily in the future to OSF DCE.
NCS 1.5.1 for the HP 3000 will be shipped as a limited
distribution product. For information on ordering NCS
1.5.1, contact the Network Sales Center at 408-447-4444. For
more information access the Network Hotline, subject NCS/iX.
SNMP agent
With Release 4.0 HP Simple Network Management Protocol
(SNMP) Agent is available on all 900 Series systems. The
SNMP agent allows the HP 3000 to participate actively in
management of the multivendor network in which it resides.
Availability of the SNMP agent reflects the HP 3000
commitment to meeting user multivendor needs.
SNMP is a de facto standard for managing TCP/IP networks. An
HP 3000 with the SNMP agent installed is capable of
reporting fault, performance, and configuration information
to SNMP-based management stations such as HP OpenView
Node Manager. The HP 3000 SNMP agent complies with RFCs
1155, 1157, and 1213.
Management Information Base (MIB) I and II, and private MIB
extensions for CPU and disk space utilization are supported
by the agent. The HP 3000 SNMP agent is included with HP
3000 LAN and WAN products.
HP LU 6.2/PU 2.1 API
HP 3000 enhances the HP LU 6.2 API to include support for HP
PU 2.1 capabilities. The enhancement allows for peer-to-
peer communications with IBM systems such as AS/400. The
enhancement supports the Mainframe Alternative Initiative by
providing peer-to-peer connectivity to IBM systems and by
supporting LU 6.2. This enhancement is included in the HP
LU 6.2 API product, P/N 30294A. For more information see
"HP LU 6.2 API/XL peer-to-peer connectivity" in this
section.
Virtual Terminal enhancement
The Virtual Terminal (VT) enhancement to HP's Network
Services increases the number of supported sessions from 600
to 1,250. The enhancement is only included with Network
Services. The basic VT capabilities that come with the HP
ThinLAN/iX and Token Ring/iX links do not include the
improvement.
Native Token Ring
The availability of the Token Ring product enables the HP
3000 to be easily integrated into installed Token Ring
networks. Users can connect an HP 3000 system into any
industry-standard Token Ring or 802.3/Ethernet network.
Since the HP 3000 system supports both LAN protocols,
customers can select a LAN protocol without having to rewire
or purchase additional equipment.
For further information see "HP Token Ring 3000/iX Network
Link" in the April 15 Computer News or access the Network
Hotline, subject TOKENRNG.
Second HP-PB 802.3 LAN card
A second 802.3 LAN interface card (LANIC) provides Series
900 HP-PB users with the flexibility to separate DTC and
system-to-system traffic.
For more information see "Second 802.3 LAN card for 900
Series HP 3000 HP-PB systems" in the April 15 Computer News.
Host-based X.25 management
With Release 4.0 host-based X.25 management is available for
all 900 Series systems. HP offers two X.25 management
solutions, HP OpenView PC-based X.25 management and host-
based X.25 management.
For more information on positioning and differences between
host-based and HP OpenView PC-based X.25 management access
the Network Hotline, subject HBX25.

Throughput improvements for HP Resource Sharing
Throughput improvements for HP Resource Sharing
Mike Kelley/SWT
Software Technology Division has completed initial
performance tests of HP Resource Sharing, P/N B1718A, on
MPE/iX 4.0 (also available with Structured Solution,
P/N B2345A). The tests show that HP Resource Sharing
running on MPE/iX 4.0 realizes a 50 percent or greater gain
in throughput compared to HP Resource Sharing on MPE XL 3.1.
The gain is due to major enhancements made to the TCP/IP
transport code in the MPE/iX 4.0 release. HP Resource
Sharing's CPU utilization has improved, which reduces the
CPU resource requirements at a given user load and allows
the server to support more users.
The server used for the test was an HP 3000 Series 917LX.
The benchmark was the PC Magazine Benchmark, which has been
used to characterize other HP 3000 and 9000 file servers.

New HP 3000 Series 967/977 pricing
Andrew Berlinberg/CSY
As of June 1, HP 3000 Series 9X7 high-end platform prices
have been reduced for a better match with previous repricing
on other Series 9X7 systems. For example, Series 967 is
comparably priced to Series 957 before the Series 957 price
was reduced April 1. Series 967 now offers a three-year
cost of ownership and price/performance comparable to the
new RS/6000 Series 970 announced in April.

Current quotes and orders in the backlog with this promotion
will still be honored, but customers may not take advantage
of both the former promotion discount and the new price. To
take advantage of the new prices, backlog orders must
canceled and rebooked without the promotional discount.
Promotion 2.623, HP 3000 Series 957 backlog protection, has
been adjusted so that the net price to customers remains
unchanged.

HP 3000 field upgrade changes
HP 3000 field upgrade changes
Vicki Symonds
Because of the April 1 changes to HP 3000 Series 9X7LX and
9X7 integrated systems, repricing and product restructuring
changes have been made to the system upgrades. Field
upgrades for Series 9X7LX and 9X7 systems now come standard
with a 100-user license and have new product numbers.
Prices have been increased to reflect the new standard user
license configuration.
A new 64-user license option has been added to Series 937
and 937LX systems. Customers who want a 64-user license
system should order series 937LX or 937 systems instead of
Series 947LX or 947.
Changes have also been made to Series 957LX, 957, 967LX,
967, and 977 systems.

Limited DEL support on HP MPE/iX
Limited DEL support on HP MPE/iX
Harry Uy/SWT
For the U.S. and Canada only
Software Technology Division (SWT) will provide limited
levels of DEL support and assistance on HP MPE/iX to help
customers who have DEL applications and wish to migrate to
MPE/iX. Due to the complex nature of the DEL product and
the datacomm involved, DEL will not be supported as a
standard HP MPE/iX product. Customers should migrate to
other terminal handling packages such as V/PLUS for the long
term.
HP is offering two special options for customers who would
like to take advantage of DEL support on HP MPE/iX. No
commissions or discounts are allowed on either the support
or purchase option. An agreement must be signed by the
customer and SWT research and development or product line
manager for either option.
Support option
Customers receive DEL right to use for term of support
contract, delivery of DEL run-time environment software, and
HP support from 9 am to 4 pm PST Monday-Friday, excluding
holidays. Customers will receive an initial response within
24 hours of each call. No onsite coverage is included.
Cost to the customer is $1,000 per month prepaid for one
machine. There is a 6-month minimum and 18-month maximum
purchase. Customers must have a valid HP ResponseLine
labor-based support contract in effect during the support
period. SRs or SEs must call Harry Uy, SWT, to prequalify
and provide specific configurations.
Purchase option
Customers may purchase a license for DEL right to use,
unlimited term, on one machine and delivery of DEL run-time
environment software and DEL source code. HP will grant
licensed customers, under HP's Intellectual Property Rights,
a paid-up, nonexclusive, nontransferable license in the DEL
source code to use internally on any one computer or
processor at any one time, reproduce for archival and backup
purposes only, and modify only for internal support use with
application on HP 3000s owned by licensee.
Cost to the customer is $5,000. There is no additional
support by HP of DEL provided in this option. Customers may
purchase consulting service at the prevailing HP assistance
rate.

Cognos upgrade promotion
Cognos upgrade promotion
Carol Robertson/CSY
For the U.S. only
Cognos and HP are providing an upgrade promotion for HP MPE
V installed-base customers, offering price/performance with
900 Series HP 3000 systems and ease of migration with
PowerHouse. HP has provided upgrade incentives with the
Series 6X/70 upgrade promotion, and Cognos is introducing
new, significant upgrade incentives available for all MPE V
customers currently using PowerHouse 4GL.
Cognos is encouraging MPE V customers to upgrade to 900
Series systems by offering a 100 percent trade-in allowance
for PowerHouse MPE V licenses. For example, a PowerHouse
Development user on an HP 3000 Series 70 who bought the
license in 1986 would normally receive a trade-in allowance
of $32,375. With the promotion the customer will receive
$42,600. Thus the purchase price for upgrading to a new
PowerHouse Development license on an HP 3000 Series 947 is
reduced from $28,925 to $18,700. For many customers the
trade-in allowance can be larger than the original purchase
price, and when this promotion is combined with Series
6X/70 upgrade promotion, customers may realize a three-year
payback, depending on customer configuration. To qualify
for the promotion customers must purchase before October 31.
If your customer is using PowerHouse tools, contact Cognos
Direct, at 800-426-4667, or your Cognos HP third-party rep
for a customized trade-in allowance offer.

Description: tools to assist Domain/OS software developers
in ports of applications from Domain/OS to a standards-based
UNIX system environment
Target market: large Domain/OS customers who need to port
in-house written software tools to any new platform to be
used in their production environments
HP ADVISE is one of the new migration-related products
available to the Domain/OS installed base with the advent of
the Open Migration Program. (See "Announcing HP Open

HP Apollo 9000 Model 425e to 710 upgrades
HP Apollo 9000 Model 425e to 710 upgrades
Evan James/WSBU
Product name and P/N: HP Apollo 9000 Model 425e to 710
upgrade, P/N A2087A
Description: upgrade that includes parts necessary to
modify the system from a CPU providing 22 MIPS and 11
SPECmarks into one with 58 MIPS and 50 SPECmarks
Target market: installed-base Model 425e customers who want
to move easily to the Series 700 and HP-UX
The Model 425e is HP's lowest cost Series 400 workstation.
Now that HP's migration strategy has been clarified,
customers want to move from Series 400 and Domain to Series
700 and HP-UX.
Features and benefits
The upgrade is essentially a system replacement but is
designed to allow customers to maintain both their serial
number and the system's remaining depreciation. Customers
achieve higher performance and position themselves firmly on
the HP-UX and Open Software Foundation operating system
path.
Many of the more expensive Model 425e system components are
preserved through the upgrade process. Model 710 upgrade
provides different graphics hardware, but the monitor does
not need to be replaced. System RAM is maintained, although
additional RAM may be required. Internal peripherals are
moved to the new system. The HP Apollo 425e to 710 Upgrade
sales guide, P/N 5091-4593E, is helpful for customer
consultations and answering configuration questions.
Included in the upgrade price is onsite HP installation of
both the upgrade and HP-UX 8.07 run time. If customers
order the 420-MB disk option it will come preloaded with
8.07 Instant Ignition. This can save customers time and
money.
Domain/OS customers will port to HP-UX as part of the
upgrade process. HP offers several documents to make the
conversion clear and straightforward. Any upgrades ordered
in June will ship along with the planning documents. After
June the documents will be available at no charge to
customers ordering Series 400 upgrades.
Product line positioning
HP is making a major effort to help installed-base customers
move to Series 700 and HP-UX, where they will be positioned
to use the best workstation technology as it becomes
available. The HP Open Migration Program has been was
established to provide products and services that will help
customers make this move. As part of the program HP is
committed to providing upgrades from Series 400 products to
Series 700 technology. The Model 425e to 710 upgrade is the
first of these products to be available.

Introducing HP Standard Instrument Control Library
Introducing HP Standard Instrument Control Library
Dave Clemens/VXD
Product name and P/Ns: HP Standard Instrument Control
Library (SICL), P/Ns E2091A and E2092A
Description: I/O library for instrument control application
on HP Apollo 9000 Series 700 and HP 9000 Model V/300
controllers
Target market: software developers and systems integrators
with instrument control applications
HP SICL provides an instrument communications library that
works with a variety of computer architectures, I/O
interfaces, and operating systems. Applications written
using the library can be ported at the source code level
from one system to another with no or few changes.
HP SICL is the initial offering for providing a consistent
programming model for HP-IB and VXI instruments. The
release includes the HP SICL interface library and
documentation for C and C++ programmers; HP-UX drivers for
P/N E2070A HP-IB interface for the Series 700, SICL P/N
E2091A; HP-UX drivers for the built-in HP-IB and VXI
interfaces of P/N E1480A V/360 and P/N E1499A V/382 C-
size VXI controllers, SICL P/N E2092A; and diagnostic tools
for testing instrument system configurations and verifying
instrument operation.
Features and benefits
HP SICL code portability--increases productivity by allowing
code reuse; increases speed of porting applications between
platforms and operating systems
high-level library routines for handling formatted I/O--
similar to the ANSI C printf/scanf but provides for IEEE-
488.2 data types and protocols; promotes ease of use for
programmers because data manipulation by the user's program
is not required
command set--provides the largest consistent set of
interface-independent commands with interface-specific
commands as required
improved error handling--reduces the number of lines of code
and moves error handling routines to a centralized area in
the program
System requirements
HP SICL Release 1 requires HP-UX Revision 8.X for Series 300
and 700 workstations. The internal HP-IB and VXI interfaces
of Model V/360 and V/382 controllers are supported. P/N
E2070A HP-IB card is supported on Series 700. Series 700
requires EISA expansion capability to install the interface.

HP OpenView Release 3 for strategic NSM solutions
HP OpenView Release 3 for strategic NSM solutions
Larry Robinson/CND
On May 11, HP announced the next generation of network and
system management (NSM) solutions, HP OpenView Release 3.0.
The announcement garnered May 4 cover story articles in
Network World and Communications Week. With HP OpenView
Release 3.0 you can offer EDP and MIS customers manageable
information systems and access accounts at high management
levels to supply strategic, long-term NSM solutions.
Release 3.0 products feature the enhanced HP OpenView
Windows graphical user interface (GUI) and are the first
available management solutions implementing Open Software
Foundation (OSF) distributed management environment (DME)-
selected technologies. The new, enhanced HP OpenView
Windows (OVW) leads in providing powerful, customizable GUI.
OVW provides an integrating environment and common look and
feel graphical interface for management applications. OVW
users gain an integrated picture and broad
monitoring/control over a distributed network environment
potentially containing thousands of devices. Release 3.0
offers both an end-user management solution and developers'
kits. The HP Network Node Manager (NNM) 3.0 end-user
product builds on award-winning NNM 2.0, offering the same
discovery and mapping, single-view management, and
Application Builder and DataCollector features and adding
the new, more powerful OVW user interface. The release also
provides a simple network management protocol (SNMP)
management platform and an SNMP developer's kit. These
products meet demands for standards-based developer tools
and a lightweight run-time platform with which value-added
management applications can be built and resold. Release
3.0 products will ship to customers on June 12.
Also announced on May 11 was the HP OpenView Distributed
Management (DM) Release 3.1, expected to be available in
third quarter 1992. This release builds on the 3.0 release,
adding features for multiprotocol distributed system
management. The HP OpenView DM Platform includes the
features of the SNMP management platform and provides a
communications infrastructure and common management services
(event management, data management, and object registration)
that allow integration and distribution of management
applications using multiple standards [SNMP; and CMOT, which
is common management information protocol
(CMIP)/transmission control protocol (TCP)]. The
platform has OSF/DME-selected consolidated management API,
also chosen for the X/Open Management Protocol, and
application access to multiple management protocols. The HP
OpenView DM Platform will include a structured query
language database option based on Ingres software. The
platform and associated developer's kit open development
capabilities to meet the range of industry requirements from
management of standards-based environments to integration
with proprietary environments (such as IBM SNA and DecNet).
They also provide a starting point for management solutions
that can evolve to the DME.
Furthering its commitment to open systems, HP will extend
the HP OpenView DM Platform capabilities to include full OSI
standard CMIP services and an integrated OSI communications
stack. This CMIP/OSI product is planned for release in
fourth quarter 1992.
Solutions
HP OpenView NSM solutions increase NSM service levels,
control NSM costs, and apply information technology to meet
strategic business goals.
HP OpenView integrating environment--HP OpenView management
platforms provide an integrating environment for current and
new management applications. The new HP OpenView Windows
GUI offers a range of integration possibilities from simple
drop-in menu bar encapsulation of current applications to
full integration of new applications with the displayed
network map. The automatic discovery and mapping feature
provides real-time inventory and status information on all
systems and devices attached to the network enabling an
immediate increase in service levels.
hardware independence--HP OpenView management solutions are
available from HP on HP-UX and Sun SparcStation platforms
and from IBM on the RS/6000 system (IBM NetView 6000, which
is based on HP OpenView NNM). Users have choices in
implementing HP OpenView management and can preserve
investments.
applications--HP OpenView supports a range of NSM
applications including HP's Network Backup, Output Spooling,
Performance Management, Software Distribution, and Network
Device managers, and applications from HP partners. Systems
administrators can mix and match these applications,
integrating them under the HP OpenView Windows menu bar, to
create custom management solutions. HP OpenView's growing
third-party developer program makes possible availability of
hundreds of focused NSM applications integrated under the HP
OpenView Windows GUI and providing a common look and feel to
users. These applications, including Network Service
Manager, Trouble Ticketing, Fault Management, LanProbe
manager, and configuration management, will increasingly
use HP OpenView Windows and management platform services to
provide integrated solutions to management problems (see the
HP OpenView Solutions catalog for details).
strategic choice--HP OpenView provides standards-based
management solutions to current problems and ensured
evolution to OSF DME. Applications developed now using HP
OpenView's OSF-selected DME APIs will roll forward to the
future HP OpenView DME-based platform with little or no
change. The HP OpenView platform will evolve to incorporate
new DME technologies and other key industry standards (such
as OMNIPOINT and X.700) as they become available. This
offers investment protection and lasting value for strategic
adopters of HP OpenView. HP OpenView's lasting value is
further evidenced by the growing number of strategic
adopters including IBM, Groupe Bull, and other network
element providers and ISVs.
solid business case--HP OpenView can lower costs of open
distributed computing. Typical cost savings are documented
and backed by an independent study of the value of NSM.
This Strategic Valuation Model of cost drivers in
distributed computing is tailored to specific customer
environments to confirm cost savings resulting from use of
HP OpenView solutions. Savings of $100,000 are typical in
medium-sized enterprise computing environments and can be
higher in large, multinational enterprise networks.

Introducing HP OpenView network and systems management
platform products
Introducing HP OpenView network and systems management
platform products
Paul Morrison/CND
Product names and P/Ns: HP OpenView network and systems
management platform products, see text for P/Ns
Description: series of products that allows development,
integration, and execution of HP OpenView applications
Target market: customers skilled in software development
whose network and systems management requirements are not
met by current applications
Some large, important customers (including US West, OKI, and
Telecom Australia) need network and systems management
applications that are not satisfied by third-party or
previous HP offerings. These customers, if they have
relevant development expertise, can be interested in HP's
network management developer products.
HP OpenView Platform products are a series of software,
documentation, training, and support products that enable
communications professionals to develop network and systems
management applications in a comprehensive, standards-based
environment.
Basic software products
HP OpenView Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP)
developer kit--the development environment for creating
applications to manage SNMP/TCP/IP devices or networks. Kit
contains two major application program interfaces (APIs):
HP OpenView Windows API, for manipulation of the graphical
user interface, and the Direct SNMP API, for issuing and
receiving management messages across networks.
HP OpenView SNMP platform--the run-time environment for
applications developed with the SNMP Developer Kit 3
HP OpenView Distributed Management (DM) developer kit--the
development environment for creating applications to manage
networks using multiple management protocols or multiple
communications stacks (including CMIP over an OSI stack in
late 1992). Kit contains all the elements of the SNMP
developer kit and a preliminary version of the HP X/Open
Management Protocols (XMP; formerly CM API) API for
accessing SNMP, CMOT (CMIP over TCP/IP), and Event
Management Services (EMS).
HP OpenView DM Platform--the run-time environment for
applications developed with either the DM or SNMP developer
kits
HP's documentation, training, and support combine with the
basic software products to provide a fundamental value of
minimized time to market.
DM platform products are attractive to customers such as
telecomm companies, governments (or their suppliers), and
other large, sophisticated end users. SNMP platform
products are aimed at network element providers (NEPs), such
as Cisco or NET, and VARs. Colorado Network Division's
factory-based sales team handles these accounts.
DM platform products features and benefits
standards based--Standards imply stable programming methods
and interoperability with other standards-based network
devices.
fast path to Open Software Foundation distributed
management environment (OSF DME)--DME is the emerging
standard for network applications development environments.
As a major contributor of technology to DME, HP has early
access to DME functionality from other contributors.
Developers have access to key DME technology with HP's
assured compliance.
developer support--To ensure developer success HP
delivers training, access to factory support engineers,
thorough documentation, design and consulting assistance,
and VAB programs.
availability on multiple computer systems--HP OpenView
platform products are available on HP, Sun Microsystems, and
IBM systems. Developers who use HP OpenView can move
applications between major computer platforms with minimal
effort.
Customer qualification
DM developers would have to deal with multiple management
protocols and/or multiple communications stacks. They would
have a WAN in mind, be interested in a standard development
environment, and perhaps have to manage devices with
proprietary protocols. They would be interested in the
future CMIP option.
Sales cycle
HP OpenView platform products are sold when HP Network Node
Manager and other HP and third-party applications do not
meet customer needs. The sales cycle for DM products can be
long, involving technical literature such as the technical
evaluation guide or product documentation, a demo, a factory
visit, and evaluation software. Professional Services
Organization and factory marketing support personnel are
often useful allies. The result for sales reps is critical
visibility in large accounts.

HP OpenView Network Node Manager Release 3.0
HP OpenView Network Node Manager Release 3.0
Carole Crall/CND
Product name and P/Ns: HP OpenView Network Node Manager
Release 3.0, P/Ns J2316A/J2317A/J2318A
Description: standards-based network and systems management
solution for campus/site environments and multivendor TCP/IP
networks
Target market: IP-based customer networks with 50-2,000
nodes using simple network management protocol (SNMP)
Features and benefits
New features in the graphical user interface allow maximum
management station flexibility and customization. Customers
can create a management environment that mirrors distributed
environments. Unlimited map views, background graphics, and
custom symbols can be added to the standard user interface
without programming.
By defining symbols that automatically execute programs or
scripts when mouse selected, customers can accelerate manual
tasks. The ability to perform specific operations on the
connections between map objects makes management of the
entire environment from a single station more efficient.
HP OpenView Network Node Manager's planning and problem
management tools are also improved. With enhanced Data
Collector graphing capability, customers can identify trends
across the environment with graphs that are easy to create
and print. The same graphs can be used in real time to
identify and evaluate deviations from normal operating
conditions.
Product line positioning
HP OpenView Network Node Manager is part of the HP OpenView
family. The product represents application functionality
and the HP OpenView SNMP platform functionality. For
customers who have previously purchased the HP OpenView SNMP
platform, a credit may be applied to the purchase of HP
OpenView Network Node Manager.
Competitive positioning
HP OpenView Network Node Manager can outperform SunNet
Manager. Based on Open Software Foundation (OSF)/Motif and
SNMP standards, HP OpenView Network Node Manager also has
the advantage of being based on the technology selected for
the OSF Distributed Management Environment (DME) framework,
HP OpenView.
IBM has licensed HP OpenView Network Node Manager 2.0 from
HP and will begin shipping a product this month. IBM has
made cosmetic changes to the user interface and integrated
some standalone RS/6000 configuration tools; but the HP
product has more current capabilities.

New HP DTC--terminal server for HP-UX
New HP DTC--terminal server for HP-UX
Michel Ferachoglou/GND
Product name and P/N: HP Datacommunication and Terminal
Controller (DTC) DTC16, P/N 2340A; DTC48, P/N 2345A
Description: new release of dual protocol multivendor
communication server optimized for the HP environment
Target market: multiuser standalone or multiple LAN-
attached HP systems in HP or multivendor environments,
primarily standalone HP 9000 Series 800 customers (with
system expansion and decentralized terminal connectivity)
The latest revision of HP DTC software represents a
significant step toward making the DTC the chosen server for
HP-UX. HP continues to enhance support of third-party
applications on HP MPE-i/X for PAD and TELNET users'
operational efficiency. PC software installation
enhancements virtually eliminate risk of errors and increase
ease of use for network managers.
Enhancements features and benefits
HP 9000 mux-compatible interface (DTC Telnet Extension
Utilities):
access to DTC-connected devices via standard UNIX system
device file I/O--allows customers and VARs to use most
applications designed to access muxes, which can use
terminal server technology without modifications. This
provides more functionality and better system integration
than some solutions available with third-party terminal
server implementations. See next article.
DTC port identification via IP address or DTC board/port
identifiers--provides identity checking of DTC devices,
allowing security checks and document printing on
appropriate DTC printers
Performance improvements under HP 9000-based management:
approximately twenty-percent improvement in host-based
configurations compared to previous release and
Telnet/TCP/IP tuning for output-intensive applications--
allows systems to support more users and printers per system
and DTC
Large HP 9000 configurations support:
extended terminal configuration capabilities to support
large-scale online transaction processing with up to 150
DTCs--allows high-end systems to achieve full user capacity
potential
tools for large numbers of users (PC-based only)--provides
configuration, management, and troubleshooting functions
that can be used on DTC groups, making configuration of
multiple devices faster and easier
find port tool (PC-based only)--returns the physical
location of a DTC port
Enhanced third-party applications support on HP 3000:
TELNET/iX user block-mode and type-ahead support and
Padsup/iX application type-ahead support--enlarge the number
of applications supported through TELNET/iX products and
DTC/X.25 PAD support, such as Cognos Quick
enable/disable user logon and enable/disable ENQ/ACK
protocol--enhance application support in DTC back-to-back
configurations; ensure HP MPE V migration
PC software installation:
PC installer using expert technology--reduces PC software
installation time and errors
Requirements for installed base
HP DTC16 hardware has no specific requirements. HP DTC48
hardware with date code less than 3110 requires a memory
extension (P/N 2348A) to take advantage of new functionality
(see "New HP DTC48 upgrade kit" in the June 1, 1991, issue).
HP OpenView DTC Manager software must be updated to the 12.1
release and HP OpenView DTC Entry-Level Manager/UX must be
updated to the 2.0 release (see "Management software
requirements for enhanced HP DTC" in this issue). For
the HP MPE/iX fundamental operating system, 900 Series HP
3000-specific enhancements are supported with MPE/iX Release
2.2 or later. For the HP-UX operating system, HP 9000-
specific enhancements are supported with Release 8.0 or
later.
HP DTC Telnet Extension Utilities will be available with the
next release of HP-UX but are currently available through
standard electronic delivery.

HP DTC surpasses competition with nailed ports
HP DTC surpasses competition with nailed ports
Etienne Coulon/GND
Grenoble Networks Division (GND) introduces new competitive
features for the DTC with HP 9000 systems that no third-
party terminal server can currently offer. The new DTC
Telnet Extension Utilities for HP-UX and the DTC provide
interface and functionality compatible with those of HP 9000
system multiplexers. The DTC Telnet Extension Utilities
surpass competitive offerings by providing the extended
features, system integration, and lowest host-CPU overhead
that only a single-vendor solution can deliver.
The utilities are designed for LAN-based HP 9000 Series
300/800 and HP Apollo 9000 Series 400/700 systems using
either the DTC16 or DTC48 (P/Ns 2340A and 2345A) for
terminal/printers/device connectivity. With these new HP-UX
utilities for the DTC, customers can use current HP-UX
applications designed for use with multiplexers over LANs
and benefit from using the terminal server technology. The
utilities can be used when the DTC is managed by the host or
by a dedicated HP OpenView PC.
Currently two utilities are available: DTC Device File
Access provides system interface for nailed/dedicated
devices (host access to DTC-connected devices via standard
UNIX system device file I/O). DTC Port Identification
provides system interface for identification of DTC-attached
devices.
Benefits
These two utilities give customers greater investment
protection as HP-UX applications can use the terminal server
technology without loss of functionality. Now most HP 9000
applications can use the DTC without any modification. The
utilities allow superior HP system integration with security
checking, document printing on appropriate DTC printers, and
easy online diagnostics capabilities such as user device
identification for operator logout.
Competitive positioning
With these utilities the HP 9000/DTC global solution offers
terminal I/O characteristics equivalent to DEC and IBM
solutions. Compared to DEC, customers can use applications
with multiplexer or terminal server technologies without
losing functionality. Compared to IBM, users can print on
network-attached printers as if connected directly to the
terminals.
Compared to third-party TCP/IP terminal servers, the HP DTC
is currently the terminal server solution that ensures the
best transparency of networks with HP 9000 systems by
offering superior system integration, additional network
benefits, and lower host-CPU overhead.

GND is working on decreasing the functional and performance
differences between multiplexers and DTCs. The increasing
transparency between DTC and HP 9000 multiplexer solutions
will continue to differentiate HP's DTC from third-party
terminal servers as a solution for HP 9000 systems.

Management software requirements for enhanced HP DTC
Management software requirements for enhanced HP DTC
Jean-Jacques Ozil/GND
The new 12.1 release of the PC-based HP OpenView DTC
Manager, P/Ns D2355A and 32054C option 201, or the new 2.0
release of the HP-UX host-based HP OpenView DTC Entry Level
Manager/UX, P/N J2120A, are required to take advantage of
new HP DTC functionality.
Migration information
The PC-based HP OpenView DTC Manager Release 12.1 runs with
the latest software version of the HP OpenView PC
workstation and requires at least HP OpenView 4.0 and MS-DOS
3.3, 4.0, or 5.0. It also requires one of the following
combinations: Microsoft Windows 3.0A and ARPA Services
2.1/MS-DOS Version B.02.00; Microsoft Windows 3.0A and ARPA
Services 2.1/MS-DOS Version B.03.00; or Microsoft Windows
3.1 and ARPA Services 2.1/MS-DOS Version B.03.00.
Customers on support services for HP OpenView DTC Manager
will automatically receive Release 12.1 with the ARPA
Services 2.1/MS-DOS version B.03.00. Customers running the
HP OpenView DTC Manager Release 6.0, 10.5, or 12.0 without
the support services should order HP OpenView Windows
workstation upgrade, P/N D1824C option 201. They will then
receive HP OpenView DTC Manager Release 12.1 and the HP
OpenView workstations software upgrade, including HP
OpenView, Microsoft Windows, HP ARPA Services, and MS-DOS.
For HP OpenView DTC Entry Level Manager/UX customers,
Release 2.0 requires DTC48 with a date code greater or equal
to 3110. DTC48s with date codes lower than 3110 require the
P/N 2348A memory upgrade. Release 2.0 will operate without
restriction on DTC16s.
Installed base
With HP OpenView DTC Manager Release 12.1 support will end
for Release 10.5. Support will continue for Releases 6.0
and 12.0. Migration tools and an enhanced software
installer are available with Release 12.1 to facilitate
migration from these previously supported releases.
For the HP OpenView DTC Entry Level Manager/UX, support will
continue for Release 1.0. Transparent upgrade to Release
2.0 is provided by an embedded migration tool.

Competitive information
In tests conducted by the National Software Testing
Laboratories (NSTL) in April, the HP PC LAN Adapter/16 TP
Plus showed the highest overall performance when compared to
16-Bit LAN cards from 3COM, SMC, Racal Interlan, Novell, and
Intel. The tests measured throughput (KB/s) and CPU
utilization (percent) using Novell's Perform 3. Overall
performance is derived from throughput divided by CPU
utilization.

HP 3000 and 9000 external storage price reductions
HP 3000 and 9000 external storage price reductions
Sandra Johnson/DMD
Effective June 1, prices on some HP external SCSI mass
storage solutions will be reduced. List prices on selected
rack and minitower cabinets and disks connecting to HP 9000
Series 300 and HP Apollo 9000 Series 400 and 700 systems
will decrease by 8-13 percent. This puts the HP minitower
cabinet list price, when upgraded to three 1.3-GB drives,
approximately 17 percent below Sun Microsystems's expansion
pedestal with four 1.3-GB drives and equal to the pedestal
with eight 1.3-GB drives. Comparable Sun products include a
single-disk storage module and an expansion pedestal that
holds up to eight 1.3-GB drives. HP discounts on storage
products may make pricing more favorable in comparison
to Sun's. Comparisons are based on Sun's recently reduced
prices.
List prices on cabinets and disks connecting to HP 3000
Series 9X7 and HP 9000 Model 8X7 systems will decrease by 7-
29 percent. Internal upgrade disks will decrease up to 30
percent. The list price of the 1.3-GB FL rack will decrease
by 13 percent.
